Participation:

153 teams participate in the competition:

- all Primeira Liga teams;

- all non-II Segunda Liga teams;

- all non-II Campeonato de Portugal Prio teams;

- winners from the last season's regional cups.



The 17 Segunda Liga teams enter the competition directly at the 2nd Round.

The 18 Primeira Liga teams enter the competition directly at the 3rd Round.





Knockout stage:

1st Round:

120 teams are drawn into 60 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.

15 losing teams will be chosen to enter the 2nd Round along with the 60 winners.



2nd Round:

75 teams from the 1st Round and the 17 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 46 pairs.

Teams are seeded into 2 pots:

Pot 1: the 19 Liga de Honra teams;

Pot 2: the other 73 teams.

Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2 until Pot 1 is emptied.

The remaining Pot 2 teams are drawn against each other.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

In matches involving teams from different pots Pot 2 teams are hosts, otherwise hosting is determined by the draw.



3rd Round:

46 teams from the 2nd Round and the 18 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 32 pairs.

Teams are seeded into 2 pots:

Pot 1: the 18 Primeira Liga teams;

Pot 2: the other 46 teams.

Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2 until Pot 1 is emptied.

The remaining Pot 2 teams are drawn against each other.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

In matches involving teams from different pots Pot 2 teams are hosts, otherwise hosting is determined by the draw.



4th Round:

32 teams are drawn into 16 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



8th Finals:

16 teams are drawn into 8 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Quarter-finals:

8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.

Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Semi-finals:

4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.

Winners are decided over two legs.

Hosting is determined by the draw.



Tie-breakers for the Semi-finals knockout matches:

1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. extra time, 4. penalties.



Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Taça de Portugal winner.

Winner is decided over one leg, with extra time and penalties if score is level after regular time.

The match is played at a neutral venue.



Qualification for UEFA competitions:

winner: UEFA Europa League

* - if the Taça de Portugal winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, then no team from the Taça de Portugal qualifies. The best placed Primeira Liga team, not otherwise qualified for the UEFA Europa League, earns the spot instead.
